The race for a World Series position in New Zealand continued in Western Australia at the Italian club in Bunbury on Friday night. Over two rounds of this competition 99 players have played off for a position on the World Series stage in Auckland. On this night former PDC tour card holder GG Mathers stamped his authority on the competition by securing the event.
The quarter finals saw the winner from the last round, Brandon Weening, fall to Mitchel Beswick in a deciding leg, 5-4. Jeremy Fagg also fell by the same margin to Mal Cuming from Victoria. Queensland had better success with GG Mathers as he defeated his local opponent, Bailey Marsh, 5-3. The final match saw Stephen Ireland eliminate Stuart Coburn 4-2.
The semi finals saw Mathers defeat Cuming 5-1, the Victorian only winning the fourth leg of the match. Beswick went 1-0 up before falling 2-1 behind to Ireland. Two leg wins in a row then gave Beswick back the lead at 3-2 but he failed to win another leg and Ireland secured the match 5-3.
The final saw GG deliver a commanding performance, his consistent high scoring was matched with clinical finishing. His first leg did not demonstrate that finishing but thanks to three visits of over 130 in his first four times to the oche he was in a strong enough position to take the opening break despite taking a little time to do so. He then held throw with a big fish checkout of 170, securing a 125.25 average in just 12 darts in the leg. He then broke once more before Ireland impressed in leg four with a 13 dart break of throw, averaging 115.62. At 3-1 Mathers put his foot down as he broke and then held throw to move a leg away. Ireland then held throw as Mathers missed the bull for another 170 check out. Mathers put that behind him though and tops was his friend to hold throw and win the match.
After two events in the race for the local Australian stage position in the World Series of Darts 2025 at Auckland Weening has stayed in the lead, with Beswick and Mathers in equal second and Brody Klinge and Ireland equal behind them. Local WA player Koha Kokiri is in sixth place, a total of 56 players having secured some points in the first two qualification rounds
