The Winmau Prodarts Series continued on Friday night with the opening event in the Simon ‘The Wizard’ Whitlock Trophy weekend at the Geelong Greyhound Club.
After the dog races were run and won (the likes of Hill Top Johnnie winning the Simon Whitlock race, Ruff Shot the Kyle Anderson event, and It’s a Brew winning the Top Shot Promotions event it was down to the players to do their stuff.
The final eight match ups saw GG Mathers defeat Liam McDonell 5-2, Brody Klinge get past Brandon Weening by the same scoreline, Mal Cuming defeat Joe Comito 5-3 and Darren Penall edge past Dean Gibb in the deciding leg to win 5-4.
Penhill would get into another tough battle in the semi final but this time he came out the wrong side of the deciding leg against Cuming.
Penhall had been the first to take a break of throw, in the 7th game to lead 4-3 only for Cuming to break straight back in 15 darts (he even had a shot at the bull for the leg with his 12th dart.)
In the final leg both players had their chances with Penhall missing the bull for a 161 check out but then unable to clean up the 25 on his next visit. Cuming himself had busted 52 but his return to the oche saw him take out the check out on his next visit and secure a place in the final.
The other semi final was a clearer affair with Klinge defeating Mathers 5-2. Mathers actually broke the Klinge throw in the third leg to lead 2-1 but it would be the last leg he would win on the night and Klinge progressed to the final.
Thus the final was an all Victorian affair and having missed the previous weekend it was Cuming who returned to take out the Friday night event final, with a 5-1 victory.
Klinge actually held throw at his first attempt to be 1-1 after two legs but a 14 dart hold of throw was then followed by two breaks from The Bull with a hold of throw sandwiched in between to give Cuming the win.
The Simon Whitlock Trophy events continue over the weekend with two events on Saturday and another two on Sunday
