BAILEY Marsh says Australian World Cup winner Damon Heta is his inspiration as he bids for glory at the PalmerBet Queensland Darts Masters in Townsville tonight.
The 20-year-old car mechanic from Perth says Heta and Simon Whitlocks success at the World Cup of Darts would inspire others to take up the sport and said he was living the dream.
If you had said six months ago that I would be doing this then I would not have even pictured this, Marsh said.
I build gearboxes for a living. So, to not do that for a couple of weeks and do what I love doing is a dream come true.
It’s starting to come true and hopefully one day I can do what Damon’s doing and not have to work six days a week.
Heta won the World Cup of Darts with Whitlock in June as Australia won that title for the first time.
He also won the Brisbane Darts Masters in 2019, the last time the World Series roadshow visited Australia because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Marsh, who will play at the World Junior Championships later this year, said he would love to emulate what Heta had achieved on the PDC Tour.
We have both played juniors, he said.
He’s just at that next level and is where I’m trying to get to. I would love to do what he is doing now.
Damon and Simon winning the World Cup just goes to show that anyone can do it as long as they put their mind to it.
Marsh will line up on the same side of the draw as Heta and Whitlock alongside the Australian and New Zealand qualifiers in Townsville on Friday night.
He said he would love to play former junior world champion Dimitri van Den Bergh, three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen or world No.1 Gerwyn Price in the first round, but said whoever he played he would not be overawed.
Once I play my own game, it’s just me and the board, Marsh said.
That’s it. There’s just one person in front of me and then once I got that out of the way there is just another one until till the title.
If I play my own game and anything can happen.
I feel confident in my game, so I am looking forward to it.
