In the penultimate full round of the DPA Winmau Satellite Series the most consistent players across the series were rewarded with wins on the Friday night as Robbie King (Qld), Danny Porter (SA), Brandon Weening (Vic), Justin Miles (WA) and Dave Hanel (NSW) all took home their respective state events.
In Victoria Mal Cuming made another final, this time at Melton Darts Club, this time seeing off Ash Britt 6-3 in their semi final. Weening had his semi final go down to the wire as he came from a 1-4 deficit to Stuart Coburn to breaking the Coburn throw in 15 darts in the deciding leg to win 6-5. The final seemed to be a one way affair as Weening took his chances and moved to a 5-0 lead in the chase to six before Cuming won two legs in a row. In the eighth leg, however, he was unable to hold his own throw and with his 14th dart of the leg Weening closed out the night’s event with a 6-2 victory.
In Queensland Robbie King was able to replicate that score in his final against James Bailey. Both players had won their semi finals 6-3, Bailey over Bill Aitken and King over Adam Bainbridge. The final saw Bailey hold throw only to lose the next two legs before he broke back to go 2-2 with his opponent. King immediately retaliated as me broke straight back in 16 darts and from there went on to win the next three legs in a row to secure the match 6-2.
In South Australia Danny Porter continued on his roll as he made another final by defeating Kym Mitchell, who is also on a strong run of form herself, in the first semi final by six legs to two, with Adam Leek becoming his opponent after he saw off Steve Letts 6-4 in the other semi. Porter’s dominance continued in the final as he took an early 3-0 lead before Leek could even settle into the match. Leek held throw in the fourth leg before Porter won the next three legs, including a 110 check out in the penultimate leg.
Danny Porter was not the only man to win 6-1 in Friday nights finals as Justin Miles defeated David Platt in a DPA Final for the second time this season. Miles had overcome Brenton Lloyd 6-2 in the semi final stage, with Platt eliminating Joe Comito 6-3 at the same stage. With a break in the second leg and holding his throw before and after, Miles went to a 3-0 lead. As with the South Australian final sequence, Platt then held his throw before Miles won the next three legs in succession to secure the match 6-1, including a 1-8 check out in the 5th leg. Miles finished the final with an average a touch over 100.
In NSW Dave Hanel survived a scare in the semi final, coming from behind to win the final leg against the visit and therefore eliminated Dave Marland in the semi finals. His opponent in the Final, Jamie Browne, had progressed past Ciaran Holmes 5-4 in the other semi final. Unlike the rest of the evening this final would turn out to be a tight affair. Both players held throw in the opening three legs before Browne got a break in the fourth to lead 3-1. Browne then held throw to take a comfortable lead 4-1 and look good for the win. Hanel held throw in the sixth leg in 14 darts before breaking his opponent’s throw. Another hold of throw and the match was in parity after eight legs. Browne then seemed to steady the ship with a 14 dart hold of throw moved him a leg away from the win. Hanel was in the same position as he had been in the semi final and he replicated that match by holding his throw in the penultimate leg. In the final leg both players had their opportunities, with Browne unable to convert 114 in six darts, and Hanel taking four visits to secure the same score and win the final and the first NSW event of the weekend by 6 legs to 5.
