As I sit here struggling to write these words, all I can feel is numb. Numb from the shock of hearing Australia has lost one of its true legends of Darts, a mate, one of life’s good guys – ‘The Original’ Kyle Anderson, who has sadly passed away.
A larger than life character, always ready with a smile, one-liner and simply a pleasure to be around. There wasn’t a time you wouldn’t be laughing, swapping jokes or having a good time. An infectious nature and kind heart who always, without exception, encompassed all around him.
I remember the 9-darter, the WSOD win in Auckland, proudly representing his country, the dinner dates, the raucous laughter, the hugs and the interviews. Aah. The interviews. Without exception, some of the best times as each tried their damnedest to make the other crack up first. Invariably our meetings descended rapidly into fits of giggles and any semblance of seriousness shot through immediately. With his irreverent smile he will always be remembered by me as ‘Chuckles.’
Never one to bemoan his lot in life, his kidney issues and poor health, instead he carved out a path on the PDC circuit in order to provide for his family by doing something he was exceptionally good at; playing Darts, although the long periods of separation from his family at home here in Australia weighed heavily. He loved his kith and kin and he loved this wonderful country.
He opened doors, encouraged everyone, mentored and was happy to offer advice to anyone who sought it. Kyle commanded respect, never demanded it. He just did what Kyle did and by jingo he did it so very well.
He was, is and always will be a proud Indigenous Australian and his memory will live long in the hearts of the darting community throughout the world, such was the esteem in which he is, quite rightly, held globally.
We are left with private thoughts and reminiscences that raise a smile and, without doubt, will bring a tear or three at his sudden demise. For those who knew him and were able to spend time with, his passing leaves us with a void that will never be filled.
He was called ‘the Original’ for a reason. A pioneer, pace setter, leader and one of the most humble human beings I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Kyle will never be replaced. They broke the mould when he was cast, you cannot improve on the creation he’ll be remembered for by the darting community and community in general.
He gave so much, asked so little but leaves us all the better as human beings for having known him.
Love ya mate. We’ll miss you but you will never be forgotten.
Recently becoming a father once more just a few short months ago, we send our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his wife, Tara, his children, family and friends.
Kyle ‘The Original’ Anderson
R.I.P mate.
