Saturday saw another day of high standard darts at the Winmau DPA Pro-tour, the DPA Challenge tour and the DPA Ladies tour, all events occurring at the Commercial Club Albury. Winners on the day included Brody Klinge, Darren Penhall, Jade Lock and Joel Hynd.
The first Winmau DPA Pro-tour event on the Saturday saw a star-studded field qualify for the quarterfinals. Joe Comito eliminated Mal Cuming in a deciding leg 6-5. The other three matches finished 6-3, with Harley Kemp falling to Koha Kokiri, Brandon Weening overcoming James Bailey and Brody Klinge defeating Bill Aitken.
The Kokiri / Comito semi-final saw both players hold throw twice, Comito taking out leg 4 in 12 darts. Kokiri kept the sequence going with a 116 check out before Comito failed to check out 56 for the sixth leg and Kokiri pounced to take a two-leg lead. He then held throw in 15 darts with Comito holding in 14 the next leg. Comito broke the Kokiri throw in the ninth leg but was unable to hold throw to take the match to a deciding leg, Kokiri progressing with a 6-4 win. The Klinge / Weening semi-final saw Klinge win the first leg against the throw with a 112 check out. He then held throw in 13 darts. Weening held throw before Klinge checked out 136 to hold his own throw in 12 darts. Once again Weening held throw, but this time he followed it up by breaking the Klinge throw in the next leg. At three legs all Klinge upped his game once more and broke the Weening throw and then held throw in 13 darts. He then checked out 113 to take out the match six legs to three, finishing with a 100.42 average. All four semi finalists finished with averages over 90.
The final saw Kokiri hold throw before Klinge did the same. Klinge then broke the throw of his opponent only for Kokiri to do the same in the next leg. Klinge then checked out 106 to break the Kokiri throw once more and this time Klinge held throw, with his opponent unable to collect 32 in three visits to the oche. Kokiri then held throw before Klinge did the same, moving the Victorian one leg from victory. Klinge broke the Kokiri throw in 15 darts with a 130 check out capping off a day of triple figure check outs for Klinge.
The final event of the Saturday was the second Winmau DPA Pro-tour event of the day. Yet again a high-class field meant that the quarter final line up was going to be filled with quality. The first quarter finals saw Brody Klinge continue his success of the day with a 6-2 win over Koha Kokiri. Darren Penhall’s return to top class darts turned up a gear as he defeated Karl Schaefer, averaging 92.26. Stuart Coburn completed the most dominant quarter final with a 6-0 whitewash of Aaron Simpson. The last quarter final was tight throughout, with James Bailey and Peter Willmott all square after eight legs. Willmott busted 20 trying to hold throw in the ninth leg and Bailey pounced on his next visit to move a leg away from the match. Willmott opened with a maximum against the Bailey throw in the tenth leg but did not take his chances for the break and Bailey completed the 6-4 victory.
Klinge’s run ended in the semi-finals. Despite leading 2-1 and 3-2, he fell to a four successive leg run by Penhall. The match finished 6-3 to Penhall. The other semi final went to a deciding leg where both James Bailey and Stuart Coburn had their chances, but it was Bailey who succeeded to take the match 6-5. It was the only leg of the match that went against the throw. Thus, the final was set as Darren Penhall verses James Bailey.
That final saw Penhall hold throw in the opening leg with Bailey then unable to hold in the second. Penhall then took the next leg comfortably, despite struggling to close out the leg. 18 darts later he was 4-0 up. Bailey then missed chances to break the Penhall throw and despite missing his own check out darts, Penhall moved within a leg of the match. He opened with a 180 against the Bailey throw and cleaned up to take the final 6-0. It took a couple of days, but Penhall was back in the form that took him all the way to the Ally Pally two years ago.
The DPA Ladies Tour Event 2 on Saturday saw Jade Lock defeat Chloe Kilpatrick 4-3 in the final. Lock took a 2-0 lead early in the match only for Kilpatrick break Lock in the third leg and then hold throw to tie things up. Both players then held throw to move the match to a deciding leg, with Lock holding her throw to secure the event.
Kilpatrick defeated Tara Reid 3-1 in their semi-final, with Lock not conceding a leg in her semi final win over Maggie Cooper. She also failed to drop a leg in her quarter-final win over Ann Booth. Kilpatrick also won 3-0 in her win over Tracey Rosenow in the same round. The other matches in this round saw Cooper win 3-2 over Sarah Turvey and Reid win 3-1 over Julia Begelhole.
This was on the back of Tracey Rosenow’s win in Event 1, winning 5-4 in the final over Maggie Cooper. The first five legs were all breaks of throw until Cooper held in the sixth leg to take a 4-2 lead. Rosenow held her own and then broke her opponent to move the match into a deciding leg. Rosenow held throw in that deciding leg to take out Event 1. Rosenow had defeated Bree Dixon 4-1 in their semi final whilst Cooper had progressed past Ann Hooton by four legs to two at the same stage.
The DPA Challenge tour had kicked off on Friday night as well. Last year’s champion Darren Lane continued his winning ways with a 5-2 win over Mark Anderson in the final. He held throw in the opening leg of the match before breaking the Anderson throw in 16 darts. There were then four successive breaks of throw before Lane held throw to take the final.
Lane had progressed past Anthony Goldsworthy 4-1 in their quarter final and Jim Kispay 4-0 at the semi-final stage. Anderson had defeated Michael Anderson 4-2 and Joel Hynd 4-0 in those two rounds. Joel Hynd had made the semi finals with a 4-0 win over Greg Holt, whilst Jim Kispay had won 4-2 over Cohen Hynd.
The second challenge tour event of the weekend was held on Saturday with Jim Kispay, Nathan Walsh, Darren Lane, Mark Anderson, Joel Hynd, Harry Pearce, Emmett Taylor, and Scott Nielsen progressing past the round robin stage into the quarterfinals. Those matches saw Kispay and Hynd win 4-1 over Walsh and Pearce respectively whilst Lane defeated Anderson 4-2 in the same match up from the Friday night final. Taylor won a deciding leg against Nielsen to also progress to the semi-final stage. Lane then repeated his 4-0 victory over Kispay at the same stage in the previous event to qualify for his second final of the weekend. Hynd won a deciding leg to eliminate Taylor and set up a Lane / Hynd final.
In the final Hynd held throw twice and in between broke the Lane throw to lead 3-0 in a race to five legs. Lane held throw but with Hynd then doing the same Lane would have to hold throw to stay in the final. He was unable to do so and Hynd secured the final 5-1 and take out DPA Challenge tour event number two.
Overall Saturday saw around one hundred players participate across the three DPA tours, with four events completed in the one day at the Commercial Club Albury
