Joe Comito put the disappointment of the night before him to the back of his mind as he defeated Darren Penhall to gain revenge and win Sunday’s first event (event 7 of the season) at the Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club. It added yet another winner’s name to the Winmau Pro Tour 2023 honour board.
The final went to a deciding leg after Comito went to a three-leg lead before Penhall won the next four to lead 4-3. Comito then broke his opponent’s throw before holding throw in 15 darts for the deciding leg, the final score 5-4 to the West Australian. Craig Scarfe had made the semi finals to continue his own fine form across NSW events but lost to Penhall 5-0 in the semi final. Another NSW star in Mitchell Clegg made the other semi but Comito eliminated him, again in a deciding leg.
Comito had eliminated another winner from yesterday in Harley Kemp at the quarter final stage (5-2) whilst another Victorian in Brandon Weening also fell (5-1 to Clegg), alongside Dave Hanel (losing to 5-0 to Penhall) and Mick Lacey (to Scarfe, also 5-0.)
In the afternoon Penhall reaped revenge of his own by defeating Joe Comito 5-2 in the semi final of event 8 of the Winmau Pro Tour. Mitchell Clegg defeated another consistent performer across the weekend, in Harley Kemp 5-0 in his semi-final. Penhall had progressed 5-0 past Dave Hanel in the quarter finals whilst Comito had eliminated his WA colleague Brenton Lloyd 5-2, Clegg had defeated Brandon Weening 5-1, and Kemp had survived a tough battle before defeating Dewayne Turner 5-4 at the same stage.
The final saw both players hold throw before Penhall won three successive legs, include two 14 dart legs on throw, to take a substantial lead. Penhall then missed the bull for the match against the Clegg throw as Clegg took it out on his next visit to reduce the deficit to two legs. Penhall held throw in the next leg to win the match and the event 5-2 and cap off a great weekend for himself.
