WA has completed another weekend of top class Australian darts with Events Three and Four of the Winmau DPA 2021 Satellite series.
Event Three saw Tim Pusey (over Graeme Blakey), Michael Andre (Mick Zdun), Ricky Pickett (Anton Soc), Alec McAvoy (Nathan Maher), Tyson Hoefel (Lee Chapman), Loz Ryder (Lewis Kirk), Adam Cameron (Koha Kokiri), and Blake Hachett (Clinton Cooper) all get through the round of 16.
Pusey then got past Andre without conceding a leg whilst both Ryder (over Hoeful) and Hachett (over Cameron) won their quarter finals 4-2 to make it to the semi-final stage as well. Pickett and McAcoy’s quarter final clash went to a deciding leg which saw Pickett throw 100, 134, 100 and 88 in his last four visits to the oche to secure the win and last semi-final spot.
The first semi-final saw Pusey win his third match in a row 4-0, this time over Ricky Pickett. The other semi-final was a closer affair. Loz Ryder opened with a winning leg before Hatchett won three legs in a row, including a 15 dart leg against the Ryder throw. Ryder held throw in the fifth leg but had to win in the sixth to move the match into a deciding leg (where he would have the throw) but visits of 100, 140, 85, 126 and a conversion of 50 saw Hachett win the leg in 14 darts and therefore he moved into the Final against Pusey.
That Final saw Hatchett hold throw in the opening leg in 15 darts before Pusey put the match back on even terms. A ton checkout from Pusey (after Hatchett had missed a check out chance in his previous visit) put him 2-1 ahead and with a hold of throw he was two legs clear. Hatchett then had a more comfortable hold of throw before breaking Pusey after his opponent had missed a chance at the leg on his previous visit. At 3-3 Hatchett was unable to hold his throw as Pusey checked out 82 to move ahead once again by a break of throw. Pusey then held throw thanks in part to his ton or over first three visits to the oche. The match ended 5-3 with Pusey securing his second event win of the WA Winmau DPA 2021 Satellite Series.
The Sunday saw Event Four take place and this time the quarter finals finished 4-0 to Koha Kokiri (over David Hughes) and Michael Andre (over Kayleigh Pickett), 4-1 to Tim Pusey (over Mick Zdun), and Tyson Hoeful (over Lee Chapman), 4-2 to Nathan Maher (over Graeme Blakey) and Bailey Marsh (over Peter Rowe), and 4-3 to Blake Hatchett (over Ricky Pickett) and Anton Soc (over Adam Cameron.)
The quarter finals all finished 4-1 except one. Koha Kokiri progressed past Nathan Maher, Bailey Marsh took out Michael Andre and Tyson Hoeful stopped Pusey from making another final in WA by the same scoreline. The last quarter final went down to a deciding leg with Blake Hatchett holding throw in that leg to squeeze past Anton Soc.
Kokiri then won his second match in a row 4-1, this time over Hoeful, to make his second Final in four WA events. Hatchett was unable to win two deciding legs in a row and fell at the semi final stage to Bailey Marsh. In the match both players had held throw, with two legs completed in 15 darts (one from each player) being the highlights. The final leg was a tense affair as Marsh required 30 and had to watch as Hatchett just missed out on a 130 check out (by ten). Over the next four visits to the oche neither player was able to check out until Marsh secured the eight he needed to hold his throw and win the match.
Thus the Final saw Marsh and Kokiri match up and despite being up against a player who had the experience of already winning an event this year, and a player who had comfortably progressed to the Final, it was Marsh who came away victorious. Marsh had held his opening throw in 15 darts but was unable to convert 25 in the second leg and instead watched as Kokiri drew level at one all with his next dart. Both players then held throw but both opponents had their shots at a break. Kokiri just missed out on a 131 checkout against the Marsh throw before Marsh left 5 chasing a 20 checkout and had to watch as his opponent collected the double five he had missed to draw level once more. Marsh then held throw in 16 darts before he left 16 chasing a 146 check out against the Kokiri throw. Once more his opponent took full advantage by holding throw on his next visit. A nervy seventh leg saw Marsh move to within a leg of the match by eventually holding throw. Two scores of 140 in consecutive visits saw Bailey moved well ahead against the throw in the eighth leg and despite a poor third visit he secured follow up visits of 98 and then 96 to check out the match with his opponent standing behind him requiring tops to put the match into a deciding leg. Therefore with a 5-3 win in the Final Bailey Marsh’s name was added to the Winmau DPA 2021 Satellite Series winner’s list.
