Australasian Championships are Go!

Wednesday and Thursday saw the start of the teams event with the NSW womens side seeing off New Zealand South Island 7-4 in the first match up. The Indigenous All Stars then kicked off their matches with a 6-5 win over a very competitive Tasmanian side. Victoria were defeated by arch enemies South Australia 8-3 whilst Queensland completed a first round whitewash of the Kiwi sides with an 6-5 win over North Island.
The second round saw the South Australians maintain a 100% record as Tasmania went down in another close defeat. Victoria opened their account of wins whilst NSW also took their second win of the event, over the Indigenous allstars.
The third round saw South Australia, Victoria and NZ South all record wins whilst in a classic clash Queensland inflicted NSW’s first defeat of the tournament. After day one South Australia and Queensland were both looking very strong with NSW and NZ South threatening in every match. Tasmania and NZ North Island had yet to record an overall win.
Thursday saw round 4 played as South Australia and Queensland continued on their winning ways. NZ North secured their first win by upsetting NSW 8-3 and Victoria secured their third win on the trot.
Queensland lead the Womens competition on points, with South Australia and North Island New Zealand not far behind.
In the mens competition Victoria and WA started up the head to head as the men from Victoria took down a very strong opposition 9-5. NSW then defeated the ACT as the two NZ sides defeated the Indigenous and Tasmanian teams. Queensland rounded out the first round with a 13-1 thrashing of South Australia.
In round two the two Kiwi sides kept winning (North over the ACT and South over NSW) whilst South Australia stormed back with a surprise 7-7 draw with Victoria. Queensland let their standards only slightly slip, with a 12-2 win over Tasmania. WA capped off the round with a comprehensive 13-1 win over the Indigenous team.
Round three saw the South Australians take another win (over the Indigenous side 10-4) whilst the ACT lost to the NZ South Island. Queensland took another 12-2 win, this time over NSW, whilst Victoria stormed back with a 13-1 win over their near neighbours in Tasmania. Finally WA inflicted a NZ side their first defeat of the event, with the North team losing to WA thanks to two final team losses in their last two clashes.
Thursday saw round four played and WA kept their challenge up with a 12-2 win over the ACT, securing their third win on the trot, whilst Victoria outclassed NSW 11-3 despite good wins to Mike Bonser, Craig Prizeman and John Bunyard in the singles. South Australia gave NZ North Island their seconded loss on the trot whilst Queensland continued their dominance of the tournament by handing the NZ South Island their first loss of the tournament. In the final clash Tasmania and the Indigenous All Stars drew 7-7.
Queensland head the table at present with WA and Vic just behind and then the NZ sides.
