Cody Harris tastes victory in Australian Pro Tour

Two young superstars clashed in the final of the DPA’s first pro tour event of the season. The day’s event was held at the Blue Cattle Dog Hotel in St Clair Western Sydney, where over 60 participants chased the first points on offer for the season.
At the pointy end of the day the round of 16 had a range of younger and more experienced players, demonstrating the depth of talent on Australian (and New Zealand) shores. In a clash of the veterans it was Brian Roach who rolled back the years by winning comprehensively over darting royalty in Steve Duke Senior. Other winners included previous pro tour event winners GG Mathers, Rhys Matthewson, John Weber, Cadby and Harris. Joining them in the quarters were other players many have talked about as future stars in Lucas Cameron and Jeremy Fagg.
In the quarter finals it was the four favourites who moved through with all matches finishing 6-2. Thus the semi finals drew Cadby and Matthewson together and Weber and Harris paired in the bottom of the draw. The first semi final renewed a rivalry that is moving towards one for the ages even though both players are so young. They had played the night before in the World Series Qualifying tour, with Matthewson coming out on top. This match lived up to its bill as the crowd were drawn to the action which was of the highest quality. It came down to the last leg and Cadby on throw. Despite that Matthewson created a double finish opportunity should Cadby have missed his own but Cadby once again withstood the pressure to take out the match. The match itself was so filled with tension that it was going to be a test for Cadby to come off that high and reset for the final.
In the other semi Harris was up against a man who was just rejoining the tour after twelve months off but who had won the night before. Despite Weber not feeling as on top of his game throughout the day as he had on Friday night there were many who tipped him for another Final appearance. The early part of the match may have read one all but the first leg had seen Harris check out the ultimate, a 170, and this turned out to be the true indicator of things to come. The match was blown apart by the scoring pressure of Harris who even managed to check out 50 with his first peg landing right in the middle of the bullseye. By that stage it was 5-1 and Harris completed the final leg to give the Final a young gun shoot out feel to it.
The Final itself saw Cadby take an early lead and gain a break but Harris dragged it back quickly so that the match did not get out of hand for him. A tight middle part of the match was highlighted by the constant scoring pressure of Harris, but Cadby was finding a way through for leg wins. At 4-4 the Kiwi’s scoring consistency put him ahead 5-4 on throw but with Cadby throwing for survival Harris maintained his momentum with ton scores and he was able to break for the victory, 6 legs to 4. Harris had scored 24 tons in the match, demonstrating the quality of the darts on offer.
Harris, joining the DPA tour more regularly this year, was happy with an early win, especially over a competitor like Corey Cadby. ”You just have to keep going, I have been looking forward to playing Corey for a while now and playing amongst good players like this is a good thing as it makes me play my own game better.
The scary thing is both players are sure they are not even at the top of their games. Harris said of his darts over the weekend, “I think I can do better than at the moment, I have in my garage, but it is hard to bring it here all the time.”
